Abstract: 

This session aims to address dynamics between supervisor and supervisee, especially as it pertains to values, culture, politics, socioeconomic status, religion, and other worldview differences. The session will offer ways of increasing communication within the scope of supervision to enhance the overall experience.


Learning Objectives:
  • Identify elements contributing to differing worldviews 
  • Consider personal biases which may influence or prohibit a supervisory relationship 
  • Demonstrate how to as a supervisor, supervisee, or potential supervisee address and resolve differences within the framework of the ACA Code of Ethics 
  • Synthesize how to as a supervisor avoid imposing values on supervisees (by extension their clients)


Presented by: Brian Smith, LCPC, NCC

Brian Smith is a licensed clinical professional counselor and registered supervisor with an active telehealth practice, serving individuals, couples, and families throughout Idaho. Brian earned his masters of counseling in 2014 from Idaho State University, and has formal training and supervision for Emotionally Focused Therapy. Brian has presented at national, state, and regional conferences, as well as an invited lecturer for university programs on treatment team collaboration for clients with mild traumatic brain injury (concussion), and facilitated several ethics presentations for the Idaho Mental Health Counselors Association. He has served as president of the Idaho Mental Health Counselors Association and President of the Idaho Counseling Association. He is currently the Bylaws Committee Chair for the Idaho Counseling Association


Co-Presented by: Monique Barber, MS, LPC, NCC, BC-TMH

Monique is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Idaho (ID-7321), a National Board-Certified Counselor, and a Board-Certified TeleMental Health Provider. She is a counselor, educator, leader, and advocate for the counseling profession. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in the Counselor Education and Supervision program at Liberty University. She graduated from Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) with a Master of Science in Counseling, Marriage, Couples, and Families, with an emphasis in Addiction. She is an Adjunct Professor at NNU. She is active in the counseling profession – currently serving as President-Elect on the board of the Idaho Association for Addiction Professionals. She is a member of the Idaho Counseling Association, the American Counseling Association, the Association on Creativity in Counseling, and NAADAC. Monique is the owner of Ever Forward Counseling x Neurofeedback, located in Garden City, Idaho.
